VMT Sense & Place
Joining components such as doors, flaps, roofs, or windows demands high accuracy under tight cycle times — made harder by fluctuating body tolerances. VMT Sense&Place measures the opening before assembly and corrects the robot's placement in real time, using color-independent laser-line triangulation that stays reliable even on demanding surfaces. The system scales from one sensor to several, adapting to the cycle time each application requires.
Flexibility

Sensor count freely scalable – from a fixed single-sensor setup to a multi-sensor robot tool

Color & Ambient Light Tolerance

Color-independent measurement, extremely robust against external light influences

Minimal Cycle Time, Maximum Precision

Correction within 1–2 seconds at an accuracy of ±0.2 mm

How it works

Sense, then place
Before assembly, the sensors measure defined features on the body opening and compute the exact placement correction for the robot — in a single measurement cycle, without iterative re-teaching.
Reliable Laser-Line Measurement
Laser-line triangulation generates dependable height profiles even on critical surfaces, independent of color and finish — for stable, repeatable measurements across varying components.
Flexible Assembly Strategies
The component is always placed in a gap-optimized position, determined from defined edges and features measured on the body opening, keeping each component consistently and accurately located.

How it works

Software & Control

VMT Tech Package
A ready-to-use technology package enables straightforward commissioning with all common robot controllers, including ABB, KUKA (KRC/VKRC), and FANUC.
Efficient One-Step Correction
The correction is applied as a single coordinate transformation rather than repeated measure-and-adjust cycles — keeping cycle times short.
Automatic Calibration
Fast, fully automatic calibration handles sensor checks and sensor replacement, and can be verified continuously during ongoing operation.

Hardware & Integration

VMT LineRunner Sensor
A compact, rugged laser sensor with color-independent triangulation for reliable height profiles on critical surfaces. Class 2 laser — eye-safe, no additional protective measures required. Measuring range X = 0–100 mm (width), Z = 100–300 mm (standoff).
Scalable System Design
The number of sensors scales with the application: more sensors capture the opening in a single shot for the fastest cycle, while fewer sensors keep the system lean, reaching the remaining features with a short additional move.
Robust IP67 Design
Compact IP67 housing (approx. 500 g), connected to the VMT vision controller or a PC via standard Ethernet (TCP/IP, 100 Mbit/s) — no connection to the robot required.
