Paint Shop

The most sensitive shop in vehicle production.

Paint Shop
A single dust particle, an interrupted seam, an adhesive bead too thin – and the vehicle requires costly rework after painting. The paint shop leaves no room for error. What the human eye misses, vision detects.
In the paint shop, vision systems monitor every coating and sealing step in real time to catch defects exactly when they occur. They make dust inclusions, runs, and bead defects visible before the vehicle leaves the booth.
By stabilizing processes under harsh conditions like overspray, reflections, and moving hangers, vision ensures consistent paint quality from primer to clear coat. It enables targeted, minimal rework instead of expensive correction after final inspection.

Decades of Dedication

Pioneering progress through decades of experience.
01

Body positioning for robot processes

  • Before KTL dip coating and every subsequent paint process, the exact body position must be known so robots can operate reliably on a moving hanger system.
  • Fully compensates position variation of the overhead conveyor, reliable performance even in confined paint booths.
  • 3D position measurement of the body as reference for all downstream robot operations.
  • Technology: BestFit / 3DLE / OSC

02

Washing & surface preparation

  • Before coating, the body passes through washing and brushing stations to remove contamination.
  • Inline guidance without interrupting the conveyor flow.
  • Position detection of the body to guide cleaning robots and verify correct processing.
  • Technology: 3DLE

03

Seam sealing & underbody protection (UBS / NVO / NVU / FAD)

  • After KTL, seams are sealed and the underbody is protected with applied compounds – all robot-applied. This covers underbody sealing (UBS), interior sealing (NVO), exterior sealing (NVU), and door aperture sealing (FAD).
  • Real-time feedback to the application robot, automatic gap closure, no manual post-inspection required.
  • 100% inspection of sealant and protective coating beads for completeness, width, height, and position.
  • Technology: SpinTop / Inspection / 3DLE / BK

04

Acoustic & foam applications (SAM / AFA / NAD)

  • Sprayable acoustic material (SAM), anti-flutter adhesive (AFA), and noise-damping compounds (NAD) are applied to defined body areas for NVH performance.
  • Ensures correct coverage of acoustic-critical areas, direct robot correction on deviations.
  • Verification of application position, coverage, and bead geometry after automated application.
  • Technology: 3DLE / TwinCam / FrameSense

05

PAD application & inspection

  • Damping pads are placed on defined body panels to reduce vibration and noise transmission.
  • Automated placement with inline verification in a single station, eliminates manual inspection steps.
  • Guided placement of pads by robot, followed by position and presence verification.

06

Corrosion protection waxing (HRK)

  • Hollow cavities are injected with protective wax to prevent corrosion over the vehicle lifecycle.
  • Full process automation with traceable coverage verification per vehicle.
  • Position detection for robot guidance, verification of correct cavity access and coverage.
  • Technology: 3DLE / Waxing Line (FrameSense)

07

Primer / filler inspection

  • After primer application, the surface is inspected before the expensive topcoat is applied.
  • Early defect detection before topcoat avoids significant downstream rework costs.
  • Detection of micro-cracks, inclusions, and uneven layer distribution in the primer coat.

08

Topcoat & clear coat inspection

  • The visible finish of the vehicle – every defect here is directly perceptible to the end customer.
  • 100% inline inspection at line speed, AI-supported defect classification, precise 3D defect localization for automated rework targeting.
  • Detection of all relevant paint defects: runs, dust inclusions, orange peel, scratches, blisters, and dents.

09

Pixel paint inspection

  • Decorative or functional pixel paint applications are verified for accuracy and completeness.
  • Precise pattern verification directly inline, no separate measurement station required.
  • Pattern verification, position accuracy, and coverage control of pixel-applied paint.

10

Finish inspection & automated rework

  • Remaining defects are identified, prioritized, and processed by grinding and polishing robots in the finish area.
  • Closed-loop from inspection to automated repair – reproducible results independent of shift or inspector.
  • Defect map with exact coordinates as input for rework robots, followed by post-rework verification.
